New LMS Functionality – Enhanced Speedtest Module

At 5×9 Networks, we continuously improve our Lightweight Monitoring System (LMS) to provide deeper insight into network performance and user experience. Our latest Speedtest module enhancement introduces advanced latency analysis throughout the entire speed test, together with a new bidirectional traffic phase designed to evaluate network behavior under real-world conditions.

What’s New?

The enhanced Speedtest module now measures latency during every stage of the test, providing much more than simple throughput results.

Key enhancements include:
Idle Latency measurement before the test begins
Latency During Download
Latency During Upload
Latency During Simultaneous Upload and Download (Bidirectional Phase)
✅ New Bidirectional Throughput test, generating upload and download traffic simultaneously

New Functionality Availability

The enhanced Speedtest module is available as part of the 5×9 Lightweight Monitoring System and is supported on all Probe platforms, including physical appliances, virtual machines, and container deployments.

Why It Matters?

While download and upload throughput remain important, today’s high-speed broadband and 5G networks are increasingly limited by latency under load rather than raw bandwidth.

The new Idle Latency measurement immediately reveals the baseline latency introduced by the access network, whether it is a fiber broadband connection, fixed wireless access, or a mobile 5G network.

Measuring latency during download, upload, and simultaneous bidirectional traffic provides valuable insight into how network queues behave when links become saturated. This enables effective bufferbloat detection, analysis, and optimization, helping operators identify excessive queueing delays that directly impact interactive applications such as video conferencing, cloud gaming, VoIP, and remote desktop services.

By combining throughput measurements with comprehensive latency analysis throughout the entire test, the enhanced Speedtest module delivers a more complete assessment of real-world network quality and the overall user experience.
